How important is cleaning and balancing?
Keeping your pool clean and balanced is a very important part of pool ownership. When you keep your pool clean it helps extend the life of your pool, equipment and your enjoyment. This isn't always an easy task and needs to be done at least weekly. Try to set aside one day a week, preferably the same day each week to spend time doing this. If you do this regularly you can stay ahead of any issues come late summer when it gets hot and the algae tends to build. If you start to notice the pool turning green, it is recommended you run your filter/pump more frequently to stir the water up and clean your filter every day. Small test kits are good to have, the vial ones are better and you can also take samples to your local pool store.
When should I open/close my pool?
This varies widely depending on many factors and every person feels differently about it. First, if you have a heater you might want to open earlier and close later. But there are those who do and still choose not to because of lifestyle or they simply don't use it due to the cold air, kids in school, etc. If you do not have a heater most open around Memorial Day and Close around Labor Day. If you think you may want a heater to extend your pool season please give us a call!
Should I get a heater?
A heater for your pool is a personal decision. But most will agree that in Northern Illinois a heater is great to extend the use of an expensive investment. Heaters come in a variety of sizes for the different sizes of pools. Cost of the heaters vary by size. The installation is separate and is determined on a few factors such as size of the heater and length from the gas meter to heater location and the size of the gas line pipe. Manufacturer warranty specifies the heater should be directly connected to the gas meter on a separate connection from your home. This is to ensure the heater receives a sufficient amount of fuel it needs to operate.
Tips!
During the winter water will tend to build up on your cover. This can cause serious stress on the walls of your pool and liner. In some cases a total collapse has happened. The easiest way to describe what happens is to think of the excess water on the cover, pushing down on the remaining water in the pool and out the skimmer hole. This is similar to a body lowering into a bathtub full of water and how it displaces it. The water that was helping to hold up the walls is now below the safe level and can no longer help support the walls and caving in. Or the cover collapses into the pool with all that mucky dirty water and now you have a real mess to clean up in the spring. We highly recommend getting yourself a 1/4 horsepower sump pump to drain this water off as often as you can. You can get one online or in any of the box stores for under $100. This is a fairly inexpensive way to avoid a very costly situation.
If you live in an area with a lot of trees we recommend leaf nets in addition to the winter cover. The net acts as a strainer in the spring to remove the leaves much easier to be able to lift the cover off with less weight and less risk of falling into the pool.
